The citizens are doing honour to-night to Dr Baird and Mr and Mrs T. 10. A. Seddou. Our departing friends are well known to the whole community, and a very hearty and sincere expression of good wishes is sure to lie voiced. Dr Ba'rd is best known in uis professional capacity, in which lie has been most proficient. "His stay bore has extended over some eight years, and it has been a busy period indeed. We feel sure we can anticipate the Doctor, and sav bo will re-gi-et fading the district and the people. The town and district has been fortunate in its loner line of medical men. and in particular those connected with the Westland Hospital. Dr Baird has emulated his predecessors I " ov 'er,v respect, and will leave behind him a very fragrant reputation. Able though his successor may he, we are sure the communitv will part, with Dr Baird with very genuine regret. There will bo many expressions of good will and esteem at to-night's function in the Town Hal! and we desire to assoc-

into ourselves in all that is said in praise of the worthy Doctor, and in Llie good wishes extended to Dr Bail’d, wife and family for their luture success abroad. With respect to Air and Airs Seddon, the guests to be eiiiicrfa-ined at the 'Soldiers’ Mall 10-mght, bear a name which will be always resp-e. ted and esteemed in this district specially. Mr Tom So idon is the worthy son of a very noble sire who achieved an enduring place in world history. As Member ior Westland the departing guest 1 mne amongst us nearly a quarter ot a century ago. He had to make a very hurried entrance into political life, hut lie bore.himself well and was in all places and all company greatly esteemed. Air Seddon is a native of tiie district and always iias loved his native land. No doubt he will leave Westland with many regrets, but he must have the knowledge of duty well done, in the doing of which he never spared himself. He lias well maintained the high standing of the good name he hears, and has to his credit also the great serviic lie rendered King and country when the call came. Air Seddon lias been outstanding as one of New Zealand’s most promising young men, and enjoys a reputation for kindness and uprightness it would be difficult to excel. Mr Seddon’s cbaractei; has been marked in his regard for the old people, and in the -effort to do his best for those in the back country. He knows his Westland as very few know it, for from his early youth he travelled up and down Westland, and often showed that he had a very warm corner lor the folk in the outposts of the district. Mr Seddon lias always shown a manliness of action in his public life, and for that reason won the highest esteem of those with whom lie worked. Westland can illafl'ord to lose, such as lie, hut Westland cmii always cherish- ’the memory of his untiring services and his willingness to serve in the military or the political arena. There will be general regret at his departure from the district, but a genuine wish for the welfare of his wife and family and himself. They have earned the goodwill of the people, for Mrs Seddon has been personally self-sacrificing in her work among the Girl Guides. AVe can therefore, in all sincerity, wish the departing guests all the good things their splendid record desires, and may be, sure their memories of Westland will .always be green.
