ALLEGED LIBEL

CHRISTCHURCH, April 10

A claim for £2OO sterling, damages for alleged libel by George William Goodge, a taxidriver, against the “Sun” newspaper, was heard by Magistrate Young this morning, The case arose out of a report of a bylaw prosecution in which Goodge was fined five shillings for being asleep, in his taxi. The statement complain of was: “Tired taxi-drivers are evidently one of the products of competition among taxis in Christchurch at present. George Goodge may not have been out on the booze on November 18th, but he certainly was asleep in his cab on the Railway Station stand, and so E. I). Mosely S.M., fined him five shilling and costs for the offence.”

DANGEROUS MOTORISTS

TE AROHA, April 10,

Albert Hirst, farmer of Elstow, was charged before Mr F. W. Platts, S.M:, to-day, with having while in a state of intoxication driven a motor-car in such a manner as to collide with Mary Fitzgerald, aged 70, severely injuring her. Defendant pleaded guilty under exonirating circumstances. The police called five' witnesses, who said, that accused was under the influence of liqour at the time of the accident. The Magistrate said it was clear accused who was returning from Paeroa races, had been drinking regularly during ?the day.
