ALLIANCE OF LABOR

Interesting developments are expected to take place in Labour circles in AYellington as the result of the Alliance of Labour urging the unions to refrain from giving evidence before the Committee of Inquiry into tho Workers’ Compensation Act. It has been indicated already that there is no unanimity among! Labour officials, and to a certain extent, matters came to a head at a. recent meeting of the Trades and Labour Council, -which is affiliated to the Alliance of Labour as a District -Council, when a motion was moved supporting the action- of Hie National Council of the Alliance of Labour. The motion was defeated, though not by a very substantial majority. The matter is to be'discussed again by the Trades and Labon Council at its next meeting, which it is stated should be eventful.

ATTITUDE UPHELD

CHRISTCHURCH. April 8. »

The following resolution was carried by an overwhelming majority at a meeting of Trades Unionists, after hearing addresses, Mr B. A. Cook and James Roberts, representing the Alliance of Labour: ‘•That- this meeting of Christchurch Trade Unionists- endorses the action off the New Zealand Alliance of Labour in refusing l to cooperate with the Committee appointed by the Government to take evidence and report on the workers compensation act, as, in the opinion of the organised workers, the Government should have consulted the Trade Unionists in the appointment of the re.p' - mi.'’U’.v's of the workers to this important committee.”

HILLSIDE A.S.R.S. ATTITUDE-

DUNEDIN. April 7. At a largely attended meeting of the Hillside branch of the A.S.R.S.. the following resolutions were carried unanimously:—

“That this meeting has every confidence in Air T. Blood worth as Workers’ representative- on the Workers’ Compensation Committee sot up by the Government.” “That the Hillside Branch of the A.S.R.S., while agreeing with the principle of unemployment insurance protests against the proposed attempt to make the workers provide- the bulk of the finance.”
