A woman made history In Londoi. yesterday by being the,.first of her sex to plead before the highest court in the Empire, the Judicial Committee oi ihe Privy Council. She is Airs Elizabeth Bethune Campbel, a native of Canada, daughter ol a Toronto Queen's Counsel (the late Air James Bethune), and wife of the rector of an Anglican Church Boston. US.A., where she lias lived for the past 21 years.

Her appeal; brought as the daughter of the late Lady (Elizabeth At.) Howland, formerly Atrs Bethune, widow of Air Janie '.Bethune, .Q.C. of Toronto, was from judgement on November 29th, 1928 of the Appeal Court of Ontario. The respondents are AIT AV. D. Hogg, and the Ontario General Trusts Corporation. The question to be determined is one of trusteship* in reference to the estate of Airs Campbell’s mother.

Airs Campbell lias had no training as a lawyer, but has been in London since last August reading at the British Aluseiim and in the library at the Privy Council in preparation for her appeal. The judges were Lord Blanesburgh, Lord Warrington, and Lord Russell, of Killowen.

Airs Campbell, a slim figure wearing a plum-coloured -costume and .closefitting hat, took her scat at the reading desk in front of the judge’s table.
