In the Rugby match between the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force at Twickenham, on Saturday, the New Zealander, G. E. S. Williams, stin of the famous. Rugby player, Mr Joe Williams, of ’Wellington, scored the only try for the Royal Air Force. Williams, who was playing forwaid, took the ball from the line-out and •.forced his way over with three men hanging on. The result of the game was: Royal Navy, two tries and a goal from a try (eleven points) to one try (tnree points). Prince George witnessed the match, and before the kickoff the players were presented to him. The company also included several delegates to the Naval. Conference. The game lived np to the best tiaditions of Services’ 'football, and dining eighty minutes of a hard ding-dong tussle, there Was only one stoppage tor. a minor mishap, and that was near the end. The Air Force forwards turned out to he a much stronger asset than had been expected, and secured a greater command of the hall than the Navy, as well as holding them at the line-out and hustling the l defence nearly off their feet by means of combined rushes . The Navy started the game at a great pace ,aud they had built up a
lead of eight points almost before the R.A.F. could find their feet. That stood them in good stead later on in the game, for, though both lines were repeatedly in danger, the Navy’s was threatened more often, and it took some. sterling defence on the part of the hacks, some resolute tackling and well-judged kicking by C. G. Gosling, the 'full-back, to keep, the R.A.F. from scoring more 'than once. At first the Navy hacks, well supplied with the ball, kept it moving swiftly from one to another l .and -tliofr passing was good and accurate, hut later, when the hall came to them less frequently, they fell away from the standard they had set. themselves. Yet all through the game they were a more accomplished side than the R.A.F.. who seemed to rely more on speed, dash, and doling. . . . Williams is now undergoing training as a pilot-officer at the R. A.I. training college at Digbv.
