Described as a “sea lawyer,” Arthur Caddy, aged thirty-one. a fireman on the Rarnnga, put up a vigorous defence when lie appeared in company with the ship’s storeman, .John David James Ware, aged thir-ty-two. on charges of embezzling goods at Picton. John James Martin, aged twenty, pleaded guilty at Court this morning to three charges of forgery and uttering in respect of cheques and three charges of having stolen cheques from postal packets. A FIRE. ROTORUA, April 2. A fire broke out last night in Tutanekai St. When the brigade arrived flames were bursting through the eaves of a shop occupied by Brooker (tailor). The premises were gutted. An adjoining shop occupied by Mrs S. Ponk was damaged by smoke and water. The Brigade made a great save or the block. The property was owned by Dumbleton. Insurances were £405 on the contents in the Victoria Uffice and on the building .£1250 in the N.Z.I.C.

CORONER’S VERDICT. PALMERSTON N., April 2. Sitting as Coroner, Mr Stout, S.M., conducted an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Captain Henry Cooper, a veterinary practitioner, who swallowed the contents of a small bottle of poison on March sth. when being removed by a constable from the residence of his wife from whom he was legally separated. The constable gave evidence of his halfdrunken condition. Just as the taxi arrived to convey them to the police station, the accused put a bottle in his mouth. The Coroner returned a verdict that deceased died front the effects of poison self-administered, while in a state of intoxication.

MARLBOROUGH HOSPITAL BOARD. BLENHEIM, April 2. Charles Nees was elected Chairman of the newly constituted Marlborough Hospital Board, which takes the place of the Wnirau and 1 Picton boards, which have been amalgamated. Nees was Chairman of- the Wairau Board. Distinction is added to his, election as first Chairman of'the new body, by the fact that he was also the first chairman of the Marlborough County Council which displaced a host of Road Boards a few years ago.
