Losses of £2,084,Uu) sterling on State railways and £348,250 sterling on trams during the year are forecasted by Treasurer Stevens, in a financial statement to the Assembly. Among the proposals for dealing with the problem is the recovery of portion of the business lost to road transport. Legislation is being considered authorising the withholding of lower freight rates rrom consignor,-> who utilise road transport for portion of their business; also to withhold, in similar cases, the starving shock rare. Passenger concession fares will be reviewed.
