A representative meeting of friends and supporters of Mr and Airs T. E. Y. Seddon, met at the County Chambers last evening to arrange a farewell function in connection with their final departure this month for Wellington, w lie re permanent residence will be taken up.; Mr ,]. A. Murdoch presided over a very unanimous gathering, and in addition to those present several apologies were received from citizens anxious to co-operate. Air Murdoch said it was pleasing to see that the friends of the Seddon family were anxious to mark the esteem in which Air and Airs Seddon were held. Their ex-member had decided to follow a judicial life, after years of strenuous servi.e in the political interests of the district. Air Secklon put in a record of good general work and in the time of great need answered his country’s call. He would be remembered always for his unfailing courtesy. Westland had been a favoured part of New Zealand to be associated so long, and so happily with the Seddon family, and it would be a pleasure to mark 'their esteem and good will to their good friends, and to, their exmember whom they respected .so highly. , ■.',. • Mr Evans, in endorsing the Chairman’s remarks, said .ni .'general wish was being expressed to mark the occasion in as happy a form as possible. He knew' Air Seddon ivas anxious to meet as many of the people as possible and say good-bye and for that reason suggested a popular social at a convenient date, when thanks could be expressed and .good,.wishes extended to Air and Airs Seddon. .’The presentation of a piece of.,.plate w r ould also be very appropriate. Easter .Tuesday, April 22nd. .was suggested as the date of the social of convenient to Air Seddon. ,
Messrs W. J. Butler, S. J. Preston, T. W. Bruce, It. Lynn, T. W. Duff, G. Sutherland, T. J, Stuart*- G. Huxford and others, spoke in support, of the idea mentioned, and the .ladies present, Alesdaines Creagh, Benjamin, Stuart and Fane, also concurred. The wish was expressed that ■ as Air Bruce said, it should, be ‘.‘a sociable social,” ' Y with full opportunity for intercourse, J and the Chairman hoped there would be some “old time dancing.”
: Admission was fixed at 2s 6d, and it was decided to invite donations to the presentation fund. Those present with power to add to their number, were appointed a committee, and Mr v Evans ..was appointed Secretary and Treasurer. It was decided to advise the Deputy. leader of the. United Party A of the function and invite his attendance or that of other.colleagues.;. Other invitations wore proposed, .including the members of the Seddop. family. It was also decided to advise Greymouth A • of the action being taken. Various other matters were decided, and a hearty and unanimous , meeting closed with a vote, of thanks to the chair.
