VICTORIA’S VOTE

BIG WET MAJORITY. (Australian Press Association) MTLI3OURNE, March 30. A poll on the question of whether lf.qour licenses should be abolished throughout tlie State of Victoria was taken on Saturday. ' So far as the counting has gone the figures are: Yu5—384,339. N 0—498,026. Two districts have already voted dry, namely Booroondra and Nunswading. In Booroondara he figures were : Yes, 10,485; no 8,483. The Xunawading voting was:. Yes, 10.231 ; no 7,401. There are six other electorates where the “yes” votes are at present leadin". They are: Brighton, F-ssendon. Geolong, Goulburn Valley Ivew and Polworth.

The Wet votes have a big lead, however, and it makes the continuance of the license system practically assured. The voting was compulsory for the 1,029,00 enrolled electors. The districts of Booroondra and Nmiawading were previously drv. In those districts licenses could only he renewed at a local option poll. AGO per cent, majority would he needed for State Prihibition. The campaign has been strenuous and hitter. Tt has been notable for causing breaches in the ranks of the Labour Party and Housewives’ Association.
