EX-CONSTABLE CHARGED

ISTC'f I I'RCH, March 27. •Joseph Reginald Wilson, aged 24, an ex-ionstahle pleaded not guilty this morning before .Magistrate Mosley to four (barges of theft from shops while on night patrol in Christchurch early in 1929, and one of breaking, entering and theft.

The first charge heard was of theft of a for coat valued at £2B, the property of Liberty’s Ltd., the employees of which identified the coat produced. Cladys Myrtle Johanuson. single, said she had been engaged to accused and the marriage was to have taken place on June 26th. last. Ac: used who was then a constable, gave witness the coat produced as a wedding present; The engagement was broken off, and witness then bought the coat from accused for £ls.

Sergt. McNamara said that on Februrav 28th. the accused was on night patrol on a beat in which Liberty’s was situated. Inspector Fitzpatrick said that when interviewed, the a eused said the girl Johanuson was a liar. Accused was committed for trial. Giving evidence on the second charge, the woman Johanuson said frocks allegedly stolen from a shop owned by Fanny McArthur, had been given her by the accused. Similarly cutlery, allegedly stolen from the shop of Arthur Hose, had been left at her 'qouse by accused.

Wilson was committed for trial on these charges also.
