LAND FOR CLOSER SETTLEMENT
COST OF WILDEN ESTATE. WELLINGTON, March 25. Details of the cost of the Wilden estate in Otago which was acquired for closer- settlement are given by the Hon G. W. Forbes, Minister of Lands, in reply to .an allegation that the cost was £2O an acre. This was an absurd exaggeration, said the Minister. The purchase price of 15,174 acres freehold and the owner’s interest in the lease and improvements of an ...adjacent pastoral runj bringing the total area to 24,000 acres, was £BI,OOO. In sub-dividing the property for closer .-settlement two sections, 'including the homestead block and its extensive improvements, were allotted to former employees, without competition. This left approximately 17,000 acres, divided info eleven sections/ to be offered under'ballot and these had been loaded with' the usual siih-division costs. The total capital value of these sections as offered for selection was £74,460, or equivalent to £4 7s 6d per acre. 1 ■ ‘
