WAR TRAGEDY RECALLED
WHEN BRITISH TORPEDOED THEIR OWN SHIP. [United Press Association —By Electri® Telegraph—Copy right. J LONDON, March »t>. A poignant and little known tragedy of; the war is recalled in the arrival at. Chatham ,of the remains of an officer and fifty-seven men,, the victims -of:--the “H.M.S Glatton,” a monitor of 5700 tons, .which, .within eight weeks of. the Arfnistiee, caught fire in Dover Harbour. There was no chance of. saving her . and therefore in order to prevent the magazines exploding and creating widespread havoc, tlie. monitor was deliberately torpedoed, and more than one hundred out’ of the 303 officers- and men on> board' ‘were sacrificed to prevent a much greater loss.
Thevessel has now been raised and ' the skeletons recovered. They will be buried with naval honours ia Gillingham Cemetery on April 3rd.
