There was no chance of. saving her . and therefore in order to prevent the magazines exploding and creating widespread havoc, tlie. monitor was deliberately torpedoed, and more than one hundred out’ of the 303 officers- and men on> board' ‘were sacrificed to prevent a much greater loss.

Thevessel has now been raised and ' the skeletons recovered. They will be buried with naval honours ia Gillingham Cemetery on April 3rd.
