MOORINGS BREAK

MISHAP TO REMUERA

TfAJARU, March 21

The Home 'steamer Romuera, of i1,2.,f) 'tons, commanded by Captain Barnett, severed six of her mooring lines during a strong nor’wester in Tifnaru Harbour this morning, and drifted to within forty 'feet off’ the steamer .Wingatui, where her bow lines field her. At 1 p.m., by the aid f r

winches, the Remuern was safely moor-

ed again

The mishap occurred about 11 e.m.. when the. Remuera, which arrived the> previous day, was loading frozen meat for Home at the south side of No. 2

wharf. High tide was at 19.17 n.m. so that the steamer, which was drawing sixteen feet forward at the time, was in high water and more exposed to the wind. A stern line snapped first, then two others, and three more cracked soon after with a great noise. The vessel then drifted in the direction of the Wingatui. which was discharging Vuekland cargo at the north side of N'v. o wharf. The Rcmuera drifted to within (forty feet of the Wingatui when her how- lines became taut and held her until it was possible to secure her.

T6’s Is the first occasion on which a ••oveol’s mnorinc lines have been broken '■v the fnrop of a nor’wester. Many voars a ,r o a steamer of the same type +he Rcmuera broke loose in a south west gale.
