The triennial Mining and .Metallurgical Congres was opened by Lord Atlilone, who specially welcomed Hie United States delegation, and regretted the non-arrival of Australians, who would arrive later. He einpiiasised the importnace of South Africa <.s a. gold producer to the world. Sir Oppenheinior stressed that mining must consistently emuuragc permanent European', settlement, winch was easily in tho healthy highlands stretching across South Africa. Northern Rhodesia, copper belt promised to be the greatest mineral discovery of our time. When ten million tons will ho mined annually, whites will be numbered by tens of thousands. The copper field was of the greatest imporiaiica to Empire development.
