CATTLE TICK
A GULL FOUND INFESTED

BLENHEIM, March 24
Indii jit'ible proof tliat the seagull liarljoured cattle tick, was provided by a gull captured on one of the beaches of D’Urviib island, Sounds County, a few days ago. This bird, which had been noticed to be behaving in a peculiar manner, was easily caught and on examination was found to be iinfested with certain insects. These ion being sent to the Government <‘iitomo'ogist wu:-e identified as the cattle tick. As soon as these facts were known, Air AY right, (principal (Inspector of Stock, Wellington), accompanied by Mr Blair (Inspector of Stock, Nelson), and Air Scott (Inspector of Stock, Blenheim), paid a visit to the Island.
Stock were examined at various properties, but none of the animals were found to he infected with cattle tick. At the same time now that the gull has 'been proved to be a carrier of cattle tick, the whole question of control has to be viewed in a fresh light and owners of stock are being advised accordingly.
