KOKATAHI SPORTS
SUCCESSFUL MEETING.
Beautiful weather favoured the Kokatahi-Koiterangi sports carnival, held at ivokatahi on Saturday, and the meeting was a success. Competitors from all parts of the West Coast were present, and there was keen interest in the events. The proceedings were enlivened by music from a high-powered electric gramophone, kindly provided for the occasion hv Mr H. T. Parry, manager of the Central Dairy Factory, Hokitika. The programme was carried out effectively by a strong band of earnest committeemen. Afternoon tea was obtainable at the ground as wolK as cool drinks, and a number of shows also helped to pass an enjoyable/ day. A grand ball was held in evening, and was largely attended, being a decided success, the floor space being thro used with lovers of the light fantastic. The big event, the underhand chop, which carried with it a prize of £25, was well contested by the ten competitors, and was got off in two heats. It resulted in a comfortable win ifor G. Horne, of Kumara. The cycle road race over a distance of aproximately ten miles, was annexed by S. G. Havill in convincing fashion from nine competitors.- The Sheffield Handicap, of 120vds, went to Nestor, who won in a sterling finish by inches, from the consistent runner BVv, Jones, this contest being voted best event of the meeting. The handicap sawing event was won by Neame and Marshall in an easy fashion. Following are the results Maiden Chop,’l2 inch log—S. Havill I6sec 1; R. Growcott lGsec 2; W. Neame scr 3. Time 41 2-5.
