TO CAPTAIN SCOTT

In the Public Gardens this alternoon Rear Admiral Byrd, in course of
..is address before presenting prizes for Scott Memorial Essays, paid a graceful tribute to the memory of the intrepid British explorer, and said; “There is one thing that members of this expedition hold in common with the people of New Zealand, and that is the deep respect we hold for the memory of Captain Scott and his men. As for myself, 1 think Scott is a hero of heroes. It is in the finest spirit that lie made his .greatest contribution to the world. Things of spirit are much more important than material things, in failure he gained immortal fame, and in (k ing left bo von a heritage success could not have given: When he lost the superhuman struggle he calmly wrote the words which will make his memory honoured for all times. So we salute the name of this great hearted gentleman— Robert Falcon Scott.”
