JAPAN’S STAND
FOR CRUISERS AND SUBMARINES

TOKIO, March 19. At the conclusion of lengthy deliberation and of an examination of the latest American proposals, it is reliably reported that the authorities are determined to adhere to Japan’s original minimum demands of 70 percent. of large cruisers and the maintenance of Japan’s existing tonnage on submarines.
ITALY’S TURN

CONFERENCE DEADLOCK
(Received this day at 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, March 19.
“The Conference deadlock continues,” said the British spokesman today. ”We are no nearer a solution than on Monday, but useful spadework Jins been done in ' the meantime.”
Answering a question, he said the parties are still seeking a Five-Power agreement, but the possibility of a Three-Power agreement had not necessarily been preclaimed.

Tt is admitted that the only Conference activity at present attempted by experts is to find a way round or through the French-Italian deadlock, where; no justification for suggestion pressure is being exerted on Rome. At least one of the waiting delegations . told French-Italian representa'•fives -'that the' time had ceased for frowning at one another. They must get tp grips with - the problems. It is not expected that anv progress will he made before Tardieu returns on Saturday.
