ENGLISH FARMER’S ADVICE
U Telegraph—Press Assn., Copyright
CHRISTCHURCH, March 14
At the request of the chairman (Mr Colin Mclntosh), one of the English farmers gave a brief talk at last night’s function on the cultivation of sugar beet.
It was not, lie said, difficult to grow, but the land must be light in character. Beet should bo grown on gravelly land, with a certain richness, but it was more successful on silt land or black land with peaty soil. Heavy soil was inclined to cling, and the licet grew fangy. Wherever mangolds could be grown licet could also be grown, Tint it should be grown closer together and thinned out from 7to 9 inches. A certain amount of artificial manure was required, Sugar beet was an improving crop, and the ground should he ploughed rather deeply for it.
