WASHINGTON, March 15. Dry testimony was 'continued before the Commission on Population. Mr John Callaghan, known as New York’s “Bishop of Bowery,” gives a graphic account of the old days. Me declared: “I hope to God the dry law will stay on the books!” He gave a picturesque, account of his experience when “Suicide Hall” and “The tub of Blood” and such places catered for men who, he said, “were without God, and without hope, hut who now have homes, families and radios.”
desperadoes CAPTURED. (Received this day at 8 a.m.l NEW YORK,. March 16. Three desperadoes, who robbed Master Bank were surrounded and surrendered to machine gun fire, after leading the police a hard chase through three States for 27 hours. All were escaped prisoners previously convicted of murder.
The police will demand the death penalty for their slaying of two sheriffs on Friday.
AMERICAN UNEMPLOYMENT. NEW YORK, March 15
The Farqily Welfare Associatoin of America, gathering statistics from its agencies in a hundred American cities, found two hundred per cent increase in unemployment in thirtytwo cities, compared with the last. Expenditures for relief of distressed in fifty-four cities increased one hundred 1 per cent. Societies in thirtynine cities report the prospects of an immediate improvement, and in eighteen cities show poor prospects of improvement. *
PLANET DISCOVERY

Great scientific popular interest is aroused .'by the planet discovery, cabled on 15th March. Two names most prominently suggested are Professor Percival Lowell and Atlas. It is pointed oiit that Lowell, was correct within six degrees of forecasting the position of the body of the estimated planet, four billion miles from tbe earth and life, if it exists thereon, must be different to terrestorial life since it is believed nitrogen and 'oxygen are in a solid form there.
SOVEREIGNTY PROBLEMS. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 15. The “New York Times’ Washington correspondent says:—“The British, it is believed, have the best established claim to Falkland Islands and Dependencies. There have been suggestions that to give Britain sovereignty over territory adjacent to Australia, it might be possible to exchange American and British claims to WilkesJand, and Falkland Islands areas.”

TORNADO FROLICS. LOS ANGELES, March 15
A tornado sweeping through southern suburbs and the industrial area of the city, unroofed or damaged 150 houses, factory buildings, telephone and power lines, and tossed a goods train standing at a station, off the track.
