A steady volume of applications in writing are being received liv the Colliery proprietors from employees and also from unemployed. A number of personal applications for work are being also made at the (aiv and the coal fields offices.
Tire coal owners are of opinion that the reluctance of many of the nien to apply will disappear when they learn of the prospects of their old jobs going to others.

(Received this day at 9.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 15
Applications for work in the northern collieries have been received in sufficient numbers to render possible the opening of some mines.
Canberra messages, .-however, state the coal owners inay be compelled by tire Federal Cabinet to observe the award or pre-stoppage rates, in any offers of employment. It is said owners have made the present move on the advice that the award is illegal, and this aspect is being feverishly investigated by the Attorney-General’s Department.
