PROGRESS LEAGUES’ DEMAND

At the South island Progress League Con'ference 31 r R. E. Goulter, (3iavloorough) moved a supplementary remit, which was seconded by Mr AY. .). Girling (Marlborough) as follows: — 1 “Tlnft t'L-s Conierence congraulates the Government on the progress being made in completing the South Island Main Trunk Railway line. It would, however, urge that tenders be called as early as possible for the construction of the necessary tunnels and bridges on the route.” Air C. J. Erington (Otago) supported the remit. He did so for two reasons. It would show their appreciation of what- the Government had done. It would also encourage the tourists traffic, for which the line Was necessary. Mr W. J. Moffatt (Nelson) favoured the remit. In supporting the remit, Mr Moffaett said he hoped that Nelson would have the support of the whole "of the South island in getting the Midland Line completed. Mr S. Ri. McDonald (Otago) said that when the North Island Mr" trunk was being built, it was said tlni. 1 it would not pay axle-grease, but that line not only ‘returned a profit, hut it “made” the North Island. At the next election, the South Island people should make it definite that no man entered Parliament unless he would support the completion of the Main Trunk. Several members expressed dissatisfaction with the progress that was being made on the East Coast Railway. One member saving they were on'v “dilly dallying” on this end df the line.
Mr Moffatt (Nelson) moved: “That this Conference, while expressing satisfaction with, and appreciation f the Government is expediting the ompletion of the Midland Railway Line, urges that additional labour-.-* ..v.’ng • lant be used in further accelerating the work, in order that" the line may be completed in the time promised -»y 'he Prime Minister.” The motion was carried unanimous'!’.
