OBITUARY.

MR WILLIAM M’AULIFFE,

The death occurred suddenly on Wednesday evening of Mr William McAuliffe, gas-works manager for the Lyttlelon Borough Council. Owing to some slight mechanical trouble, Mr McAuliffe bad visited the works late to assist in remedying the fault. At 11.30 be was found dead in the shower room by the stoker on duty. As he had suffered from heart trouble for some time, it is l considered, that an inquest will not be necessary.

Mr McAuliffe was one of the best known and respected figures in Lyttelton. -He was a prominent- member of flic Lyttelton Bowling Club, and also of the Canterbury Kilwinning , Lodge. He took an active part in the affairs of the Gas Institute of New Zealand, tVi which lie was a vice-president, and at the last annual conference of the organisation read a paper on “Gasmaking in small, towns.” Prior to coming to Lyttelton he was gas works manager at Port Chalmers. He leaves two daughters—Misses A. and E. McAuliffe. His wife predeceased him in 1918.

[The late- Mr McAuliffe was an occasional visitor to Hokitika, being related to the members of the Preston family. Mesdames Thompson and Cowie left for Lvttelton yesterday morning on receipt of the sad news of the death of Mr McAuliffe.]

MR A, M. SUGDEN.

The death took place at Christchurch on Thursday of Mr Alfred Massey Sugden, at the age of 69 years. For many years he was associated with the Christchurch Times Company as a well-known figure in the printing trade. Air Sugden was born in Bendigo, Victoria, in 1861 serving his apprenticeship on the “West Coast-Times,” Hokitika. Going to Christchurch in' the early eighties he joined the “Lyttelton Times” printing staff, being subsequently appointed head printer of the three papers published by the firm, the “Lyttelton Times,” “Canterbury Times,” and Star.” Fourteen years ago be retired and went to the North Island, where, for a number of years, be was engaged in poultry and dairy farming. He returned to Christchurch and rejoined the staff, of the “Star” as proof-reader and computer. About eighteen months ago he retired. Mr Sugden had three sons, Messrs A. M. Sugden, E-. T. Sugden, and A. L. Sugden. 'Mr E. T. Sugden died In 1929. Mrs Sugden .died in 1915.

[The late Air AIT. Sugden will be remembered by many here. His father was manager of the ‘AVest Coast Times” for many years, while, the genial Alf. was prominent in social entertainments over many years. There are but few of his contemporaries left in the district now.]
