wonKEJRS’ GRIEVANCES

WELLINGTON, March 13

An investigation of the Workers’ Compensation Act, with a view to removing anomalies at present in practice ami evolving possible improvements in the general conditions, is to be undertaken by a. Committee. The Minister of Labour '(Mr Veitch) stated to-day that the committee will comprise Messrs S. G. Smith, M.P. for laranaki (chairman of Committees of the House of .Representativos, who will he chairman); J. T. Hogan, M.P. for Rangitikei; T. H. A unstrung, ALP. for Christchurch Hast; G. R. Sykes, M.P. for Mnstertou ; J. H. Jarram (General Manager of the State Fire and Accident Insurance Department), Arthur Seed (representing the New Zealand Employers’ Federation), G. J. A. Kerruish (representing the Underwriters’ Association of New Zealand), T. AV. Bloodwortli, Auckland (representing Labour organisations), and the Secretary of the Labour Party (Mr 11. Newton).

“Numerous attempts have been made by private- members’ 'Bills to bring about changes in the Workers’ Compensation System',’’ remarked Alt Veitch, “and representations have been, made to me from time to time by/ Labour organisations, asking for alterations and improvements in the Workers’ Compensation Act. As this is a very complicated problem, it requires to be handled with discretion, and with a full knowledge of' all the viewpoints and conditions.” The Committee lias been asked to make representations to the Government with a view to preparing legislation for the forthcoming session.

The Minister mentioned that the Shops and Offices Act is also being overhauled, and will be the subject of an amending measure. The present position is that this legislation is also to be investigated by a representative committee, shortly to be announced.
