THEFT CHARGE,

CHRISTCHURCH, March 11

At the Magistrate’s Court Harold James Martin Toms, aged 21, a student at College House, pleaded guilty to stealing twenty pounds from Charles Gilbert Bryan King. Counsel said that accused obtained employment in King’s office at Timaru during his vacation. His family were not in gpod circumstances. His creditors wire pressing accused and he yielded to temptation. Accused was admitted to probation for two years and ordered to make restitution.

In reply to a request for suppression of tlio name, Mr Mosley said: “There is too much of this thing in New Zealand and punishment must be meted out. He stole from a friend and I don’t think I would be doing my duty if I ordered the suppression of the young man’s name.”

WORKERS’ COMPENSATION ACT

WELLINGTON, March 11

March 18th has been fixed by the Minister of Labour (the Roii. W. A. Veitch) as the date for the commencement of the sitting of the Special Committee which is to investigate the operation of the Workers’ Compensation Act. The Minister stated that the personnel of the committee was almost' completed, and would he announced in the course of a few days. The object of the inquiry, is to remedy existing anomalies in legislation and, if possible, to improve the position of injured workers.

AUCKLAND, March 11

Now Zealand Congregational Union resolved that the Union is prepared to consider the question of organised church union whenever the subject is reopened by sister denominations, with a view to the ( formation of a united church of New Zealand, similar to that in Canada. In the meantime, the Union should consolidate and develop the Congregational Church of New Zealand. A deputation was received from the New Zealand Alliance asking for the support of the Congregational Church against the liquor traffic, and was pledged by the Chairman of the Assembly, Revd. Lisle.
