AMERICAN TARIFF

ON IMPORTED ONIONS

AUCKLAND, March 3.

Tlie introduction, of ;i higher tariff in the United States for imported onions is viewed with concern by Auckland growers. The duty on New Zealand onions imported into the United States is now equivalent to £9 4s a ton. The new tariff it is stated is prohibitive to New Zealand exporters, and with local markets glutted with onions there is little prospect of a successful year for the growers. Several large shipments of onions were sent from Auckland to

tne United States last year. New Zealand tariffs for imported onions are £1 a ton for British imports, and £1 10s a ton for foreign. Thus New Zealand imports large supplies ol American onions in the off season, and h..s previously balanced her trade by exporting onions to America and Canada. in the autumn when the local stocks are very heavy. A member of a city auctioneering firm stated that the introduction o' Umpire preference as proposed by Lord Beaverbrook would assist New Zealand onio.ii growers, as they could then find a. good market in Canada. At present however. New Zealand was handicapped, as the United States conh.l readily “dump” large stocks of onions over the Canadian border.
