THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

BRITISH COAL AfINES BILL,

“The protest by the Council of the Labour Chamber of Commerce against the Coal Mines Bill, which it regards as “unsound in principle, unpractical in its provisions and damaging in its effects on the trade and commerce of the country as a whole,” will be widely endorsed by business men. The immediate result of the Bill must be t<. raise the cost of coal to the home manufacturer, while at the same time the marketing proposals would reduce the export price, so that our competitors would to all intents be subsidized at the expense of British industry. As the Bill offers no apparent hope of increase defficieney by way of compensation, it is to be hoped that the representations of the London Chamber and other sections of the business commiunity will result in the rejection of the measure.—London Chamber of Commerce Journal.
