ONE COMMITTED FOB THEFT.

WELLINGTON, March 5
Two stowaways, wlu> were arrested on the arrival of the Ulimaroa from .Sydney yesterday, appeared in the Magistrates Court to-day Their names were Henry Frederick King, a carpenter, aged 28; and Arnold .Francis Coker, motor mechanic,. n.geil 26. - Sub-Inspector Lander said that w.ieit arrested, both the accused said that it was difficult to find regular employment in Australia, where they lin'd been for some time. One of them bad only Id-, in his possession, and the other 3d. The Magistrate fined each of the accused £5, in default one months imprisonment. John Charles 'Purvey, alias Da,vis, a cook, aged 26, pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, to a charge of stealing eight sovereigns, the property of Eraclis Pippos. 'Purvey, was further charged with receiving’ sixty-four sovereigns knowing tnem to have been dishonestly obtained. .Detective M’Lellan said c
after Hie accused had arrived back from Australia, escorted by Constable Auams, be interviewed him at the Police Station Accused told him-that lie bad stolen the sovereigns and bad changed them for Australian notes at a Wellington Bank and that £56 found in bis possession were the notes lie had received at tho Bank in exchange for the gold Accused said he only had sixty-four sovereigns, not eighty. Witness told him that eighty were stolen, and accused replied: “I’m pleading, but 1 don’t want to get anyone else into trouble.” Accused continued. witness said, that lie had arrived from Sydney as a stowaway on
