LICENSEE’S DIFFICULTY

DISQUALIFIED BY COMMITTEE WELLINGTON, March 3. The peculiar position of Mr C. E. Falknor, licensee of the Albert Hotel, which bus been demolished for - the construction of - the Majestic Hotel, was considered by the Licensing Committee to-day. AHe is a young man, an engineer by trade. Prior to taking the Albert Hotel he had twolicenses in Taranaki. Coining to Wellington he promoted a company, which he induced to ’build the Majestic for him, lie to have five years’ licens with the- right of renewal. He had lo subscribe for 3001 shares of £1 'each, whereof lie had paid £750. Faikner was convicted of breaches of the Licensing Law, and therefore tne Licensing Committee, at its last, meeting, declared him, to he unfit to hold a license, ’ and the company determined his contract, and called on him to pay the balance on the shares. Mr J. J. McGrath, appearing for Falkiner, said that lie was now a ruined man. The lease had been given to another man. Mr McGrath asked that Falkiner lie allowed to carry on till the new man arrived in July to demonstrate that he was fit to hold a license. The .Committee, on being informed that the company had no objection, decided to allow Falkiner to continue till the end of the licensing year.
