FALSE PRETENCES. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, March 4. On seven charges of false pretences ana one of theft, Basil Warring, an insurance canvasser, married, was sentenced to six months hard labour by Magistrate Mosley. Accused had been employed by the Provident Life Assurance Company, said the police. He came across people who could not keep up their policies, so lie acted ns their agent. In one case he sold ,a polity three times. The total'defalcations were £143. CHINESE FINED. GISBORNE, March 4. A Qhinese',. Ying Sam, pleaded guilty at the Police Court to remaining in Neiv Zealand beyond the period for which a temporary permit had been granted. When approached bv the police accused produced a receipt for the full tax, but when interviewed later and confronted with a photograph he confessed that the receipt was not his. The magistrate inflicted a fine of £ls and ordered deportation. DAMAGES GRANTED. AUCKLAND. March 4. Magistrate Lcvien to-day allowed Kenneth Douglas £174 (is damages and £l6 2s costs, in an action brought against Thomas Richards, formerly licensee of Gleeson’s Hotel. The case was tile sequel to a disturbance which occurred after hours in. the hotel on the evening of September 27, by reason of an affair which the Magistrate characterised as a dastardly assault, plaintiff was knocked insensible and disabled from attending business for two weeks and bad to obtain medical attendance.
