OPOSSUMS’ FOOD

REPORT OF AN EXPERT. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 3. “Does the spread of the lucrative opossum affect the welfare of New Zealand bird life?” That question has been frequently put to authorities. Within the last two years it has been held, in some quarters, that the opossum not only eats the food of the native birds, but consumes their eggs and occasionally their young ones, from the nests. Professor Kirk, who was asked by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. Mr de la Perrelle, to. make a scientific investigation of the stomach of many opossums, has forwarded to the Minister a preliminary report. The Professor states that of the paunches of some 206 opossums examined, in the case of one only was he able to detect any animal matter. He goes on to say in his report that the fruits and seeds of the forest, which form tho food of the native birds are freely eaten by the opossums.
