The young woman doctor, Winifred Bridge was praised for her heroism in tbe Ha.vdoek Explosion. Slie assisted Dr Dowling, whom she accompanied below, facing risks and honors composedly. It was bad travelling through the workings for a, woman, but Dr Bridge crouched down and was led along. She fixed up a. surgery a hundred yard; from the scene of the explosion and began ministering to toe injured as they struggled to her. “She was splendid,” said Dr Dowling. “The line athletic girl kept her head. The fumes were terrible. Men suffered from gas and others were frightfully burned. Dr Bridge worked hard. I think she was the first woman in these circumstances.’’
