Thr. death took place yesterday at Westland Hospital of Mr Wm. Marks, of Kanieri, who only a week ago celebrated his 101 st birthday... The deceased was a native of London, and had been a resident of Westland from the very early days. He was located for many years on the Rau, Han road and of late had been living at Ka.nieri. The deceased had been enjoying fairly good health to the end and had retained most of his faculties in spite of his advanced age. He leaves a family of three daughters (Mrs Milier, of Feilding, Mrs Janies, of Pa! nerston North, and Mrs W. Neilson, of Blenheim), and two sons (Thomas, of Christchurch, and John or Kanieri). The passing of Mr Marks' removes a notable figure in the early life of the district.
A former Dunedin resident wrote to the Otago Expansion League from Sydney, enclosing a copy of New South Wales railway time table, in which New Zealand is. advertised. From that advertisement it appeared that New Zealand consisted of a tour from Auckland to Wellington, and no mention yas made of tire South Island a-t----tractons, ’ or the facilities which would be granted for extended tours by passenger visitors throughout this island. Naturally,- the ex-Dunedinite felt that his native city had been slighted, and called upon the League to exercise its influence and obtain redress. The matter was submitted to the Minister in Charge of Tourist Resorts (Mr P. A. de la Perelle), who notified the Liugue that the advertisement was apparently inserted Jby . the,-. Railways Department, and that he was requesting it to make the necessary alterations, so that the whole- of the Dominion would lie advertised. In this connection, the Minister reaffirmed his policy of advertising special . tours throughout, the South Island in connection with the Melbourne steamer, and that was already bearing fruit in the increased number of travellers coming this way. The League was gratified to learn that such direct action was being taken, and trusted that with the co-operation of the Railways Department, in the advertisement mentioned, that still better results would follow.
