There is more than a passing chance that a Federal election will ho held this year in Canada and that the Imperial Conference will be made the special occasion for it. There will be two conferences, one to deal with economic questions of the Empire and the other to deal with constitutional questions The Prime Minister (Mr King) Lapointe and Dunning have been* selected to attend these in September, hut an election, upheaval m the meantime may change Canada’s delegation. Conservatives have raised the question of the mandate of the* present Liberal 'government to appear as spokesman for the Canadian, people ayd the Prime 'Minister; may go to thb. country'so that whoever repi c•'ficnis at these Conferences, -may not labour under buy qualifying handicap, and will bo able to speak with, aiithoiity' for. Canada on far reaching fiscal reforms which the Conference is supposed to devise for fuller developments of Imperial trade.

A communique issued last night after a meeting of the heads of the delegation to the Naval Conference, with the French Ambassador, stated ]>ending tho arrival of the trench delegation.: private conversation between the delegations- are continuing. ‘fSiesw -conversations \iill necessarily be restricted in their -scope. They will however. give an.opportunity lor the British, American and Japanese delegations, such for' example, as the •Japanese, -claim for increased cruiser ratio Efforts will be made also to reconcile ,the /programmes of .requirements [already..:put forward by the three Powers ip order to expedite the filling in of the table of naval tonnage under the various categories. There will be discussion also between America and Great Britain on any point that may still remain outstanding on the interpretation of parity. , ..
