WILKINS’ FIND

CHARCOT CONTINENT. [United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) MONTE VIDEO, Feb. 22. Sir H. Wilkins arrived here by hydro- aeroplane with Chessman. They left the steamer Henrik Ibsen when about 125 miles from port, and flowlie re in a little more than an hour. A. reception was given for the explorer by the staffs of the America and British Embassies and Uruguayan authorities. The steamer is expected later in the day with other members of the expedition. MONTE VIDEO, Feb. 24, Sir H. Wilkin’s maps show three hundred miles of hitherto unknown coastline, discovered by him. Sir 11. Wilkins stated that bis expedition kept perfect health, and bad suffeerd seasickness only when making a short trip in a small craft. The weather bad been worse than oil the last trip nlthough there was less ice. The expedition had verified that Charcot Island is a Peninsula and not an island, with a large continent to the fouth of it. Sir 11. Wilkins added that instead of finding land west of Charcot, they' had found only water. They had been in no danger when cut off from wireless communication ’ last month, but, the fact of their being surrounded by a mountain range nine thousand feet high, south of Peter the First Island, made transmission and reception impossible. He bad prepared plans for the establishment of permanent observation posts in the Antarctic but the installation depended on financial co-operation of the nations concerned. It was possible for men to live in those regions for a long period. He is leaving for New York within a week to prepare, for bis projected Arctic trip in -s submarine which be considers .the logical complement of scion!’Tic work. The party came direct from Decer»+ : on Island without stopping at the Fnlkbinds. They bad two days’ very stormy weather en route.
