RESISTING THE POLICE

WELLINGTON, Feb, 24,

Having occasion to eject a man from a dance hall for, fighting on Saturday night, the police came into collision with a crowd at Te Aro. Batons were drawn and reinforcements needed before they got possession of the two men they were arresting. In the Police Court to-day Hugh Tanner, alias Hugh James I annei, 25, a fireman, was charged with resisting Sergeant Edwards while in lawful execution of his duty. James O’Neil, 32, .'a watersider was charged with assau,lt ing Constable Ritchie while in lawful execution of his duty and also with resisting Ritchie. Counsel said the men were. pleading not guilty and a remand was allowed til! to-morrow. No statement was made by the .police.

While the Archbishop of New Zealand, Bight Rev. W. A. Averill, is abroad for Lambeth Conference and a tour of Great Britain and Continent, the office of acting Primate will be held by the Bishop of "Wellington, Dr. T. H. Sprott. MOTOR CYCLISTS DEATH. CHRISTCHURCH, February 24

Gordon Middleton, a Motor cyclist, who suffered head injuries and a fractured left leg, as a result of colliding with a motor car on Friday evening died late yesterday afternoon. Middleton, who is 19 years of age was the s/r of C. T. Middleton Town Clerk of New Brighton.
