NEW LAND

The discovery of new land of which one hundred nautical miles of the coast has, been chartered by aeroplane, is 'reported by Larsen in a wireless message of llßh February. After the discovery of Nonvega .Bank on Ist February, Holm and himsclt 'constantly attempted to investigate the new land by aeroplane. It is supposed to be thirty-two west. Weather and ice rendered the attempt impossible. The Norwega then steered southward till 16th February, when soundings at 70.42 south and 12.20 west gave 1325 fathoms, shallowing to 670 fathoms. An icctrrg was siigh'e to which the vessel approached and soundings showed 170 fathoms decreasing to 125, seeming to indicate a continual shell, from which a submarine plateau Ot 1.25 f-thorns strstchtowards the new land, which vas discovered on 17th February.

The Norwega stopped at the foot of the ice barrier at a depth of ninet's fathoms, 71.26 south. 11.31 u'e.st. •Wlhero .the north-western point of land lies Larsen and Holm out and charted the west coast to 7.1.50 south, 11.25 west, where they saw the harrier stretching in a south-westerL direction. They chartered the north side, east, north-eastward to 8 west. Snow storms and fogs made chartin'? very difficult. The west point of the new land s 11.00 feet high. The eastern part is lower with an ice barrier protruding. The north coast is quite free from ice and to western partly so. No peak showed above the ic-c.
