The House of Commons, by 230 votes to (>2, carried the second reading of a hill permitting the erection nfn Charring Cross bridge at a cost of fifteen millions sterling, which ,s to be shared between the State and the Loudon County Council. r |'he measure was subjected to some criticism on the ground that the big suburban railway systems should he run underground, leaving the South London hank of the Thames for the development of business and dwellin' houses on the normal lines of sound town planning. Sir Martin Conway urged that a square mile -south of tho river lliames should he a splendid centre, comparable with Bogent Street and Piendilly with great through routes, relieving the pressure on the Strand. The cost of the whole improvement, he said could he paid by the increase in the site values,
