THEFT CHARGE

CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 20

“When arrested accused had a fully loaded colt revolver in his possession,”' said the police, concerning George Arnold Clutterbuck, 43. a carrier charged with damaging a motor car and stealing tools from it. Evidence was given that accused tlirew the tools away when questioned and bolted. He was fined £3, in default feui'teen days on each charge. The revolver was ordered to ho confiscated.

It was reported this evening that the bag containing the payroll for Moore’s Sawmill at Longwood, which ■was stolen from the locomotive on Saturday last, had been recovered in the .bush in the vicinity of a spot where it was believed to have been stolen. It was stated that a considerable sum of money was in the hag.

MOTOR VICTIM.

AUCKLAND, Feh. 20

Fatal injuries were received by Thomas Irwin aged 43, labourer, when be was knocked down by a heavy motor lorry at the corner ol Hopetoun Street and Ponsonby Road, about nine o’clock this morning. He died in Auckland Hospital shortly afterwards. Deceased was employed in tarring and sanding work in Hopctoun Street, and the lorry arrived with a load ol sand. Warning of the approach of the vehicle was given to Irwin, and when he hurried in front of the lorry, it struck him, a wheel passing over his right thigh. He is survived by a wife and three children.

FOUND DROWNED. AVELLINGTON, February 20

The body of Peter AVilson, aged 80 years, was found in the boat harbour this morning. He was recently discharged from a convalescent home. He had no relatives in Wellington. He resided at Oncpu Road,. Lyall Bay.

The body of a man not vet identified, was' found in Lyttelton Harbour this evening. It bad apparently been in the water about three weeks > and the fact that the pockets were filled with stones and iron spikes points to suicide. The police described the body as that of a man 00 years of. age, five feet six in height, grey hair, bald on top, blue eyes, an operation scar on the right jaw, no teeth, wearing a fawn gabardine coat, and dinner suit.
