Lord Beaver brook announces that the United Empire Part}* now proceeds to organise local branches and to raise a fighting f'unu of £1.00,000 to which pulili (--subscriptions are invited. A statement showing the subscriptions is being published in ' the press. The expenditure will he shown in audited accounts He says:—“This will he a new departure in British political life. Everything that we do will be done in the full light of day.”
Mr Leopold Amery, addressing the Derbyshire Conservaties, declared that he rejoiced last summer when Lord Beavcrbrook commenced preaching the ideal Empire free trade. He regretted Lord Beaverluook’s decision to form the United Empire Party, because lie feared that the energies of the Empire crusaders might he diverted to the machinery of party organisation, involving a struggle between their candidates. The new movement could endanger the Conservatives il the public believed that they were not sufficiently in earnest, or did not intend forwarding the cause of Empire unity. **A remarkable statement is made by the “Daily Herald’s” political correspondent to the effect that, the life of the United Empire Party will he short. He says:—“‘The opposition of this big newspaper group, representing Conservatism, will he bought off. The amount of the price will he announced by Mr Baldwin himself when he speaks of agricultural policy as promised.”
Tho “llerald” correspondent has reason to believe that the Tory chiefs have' agreed that Mr Baldwin shall promise the farmers a measure of protection, involving some food taxes.
