WIRELESS RESEARCH

COMMITTEE OF EXPERTS

INVESTIGATING

WELLINGTON, February 17. Wireless research is being conducted by a committee of experts under the auspices of the Department of Scientific. and Industrial Research. Hie committee comprises Alessrs H. E. Gibbes ('chief engineer of the Post and Telegraph Department), Professor lock" (Dunedin), Professor Burhridge (Auckland), Air Bingham (engineer New Zealand Radio Broadcasting Company) .and Dr Barnett (physicist of the Department of Scientific Resea roll. Its members conferred in Wellington this week, when various lines of research were formulated, including -one of direct interest to radio listeners, that relating to static.

It is intended to conduct experiments, in which the Australian authorities are likely to co-operate, into the origin of static disturbances and their possible association with cyclonic disturbances in the Tasman Sea. Some preliminary work on this subject has been done with hopeful results. Signal strength measurements from Australia are being conducted to ascertain the conditions causing absorption. and whether meteorological factors enter into the matter. ’fbe New Zealand committee will co-operate in a world-wide research into the properties of short waves in observing transmissions from Arlington, Sclinectadv, Eindhoven and a Japanese station.
