CONSTABLE WOUNDED

ASHBURTON, February IS

Constable Brown, who a month ago was Transferred from' Wellington to take charge of the Rakaia police station. was admitted to the hospital suffering severe wounds in the head. He was found lying on the floor unconscious with a revolver nOarby. His condition is low.

COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE

CHRISTCHURCH; Feb. 18

Charged with escaping from Papartia Prison in April, 1.927, and breaking, entering and theft at New Brighton the same day Roy Raymond Witting, 25, a carrier, appeared before Magistrate Mosley'this morning. Ac--eused was recently extra-dieted from New South Wales, whore he had built up a profitable carrying business. Witting pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.

TOURING FARMERS

AUCKLAND, Feb. 18

A. Allen, leader of the South African Farmers Party to tour New Zealand, interviewed on arrival of the •Ulimaroa from. Sydney, to-day, said the object of the visit was.to endeavour to tighten the. bonds of the Empire. There had been a general tendency for various Dominions 'to drift apart and if this visit could do anything to prevent that taking place, and to cement those bonds of Empire relationships, tljey would have accomplished something,. ~ The party comprises .eleven men and seven ladies, the former being fully representative of farming interests of the whole of the South African Union. East and West Rhodesia, are also represented. To-morrow’s programme involves a tour of the city as far as Heiensville. Friday and Monday will be spent in touring Northland. On Monday the party return here and join.up with an English party of sixty, and Canadians numbering six. On February 25 the whole party proceed south via Waikato.

THEFT CHARGES

CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 18

Several 'charges of 'theft relating mostly to motor car and motor cycle parts, were preferred, against ;Charles Owen Voice, aged 22,. . and Thomas Charles Dickson, . aged''22, in tire Magistrate’s Court. A third, Hugh Grant Anderson, aged 22, was charged with being associated with Voice in one case.

All three pleaded -guilty. The Chief Detective said nothing-was known against the men previously, but they -Laid made a- good start anil they i made it an open

ATTACK CN .-NATIVE CONSTABLE. AUCKLAND, February 17. Two young -‘Samoans Ti’Ai and Pilamai, members of the Mail, nppeareed before Mr Justice Lux ford in the Nigh Court of Apia on February 5. Five assessors, including two Samoans were on the bench. The accused were charged with causing grieviously bodily harm’ to a native constable, Aputi.

Ti’Ai pleaded not guilty and Pilimai guilty. 'Evidence disclosed that Pilimai had a grievance . against Aputi for'pointing him out to the Eropenp police as. a wanted man. On the evening of November 15, the two accused saw Aputi on a road and attacked: him, Pilimai admitted knocking Aputi to the ground with a large stick. Ti’Ai then struck him on the head with a stone. Aputi was rendered unconscious and, when picked up by Samoans who came to his assistance ,was in a very low state. Aputi was removed to the hospital where he remained some weeks in a serious condition. His left eye was so badly injured it had to he removed. Pilmai and Ti’Ai escaped and were only recently Idr rested. The assessors .found both guilty. The Chief Judge'sentenced Ti’Ai to five years’ hard 'labour and Pilimai to three years’ liarcl In hour.

TIGER CUBS BORN

WELLINGTON. February 18. The tiger at the Wellington Zoo gave birth to five tiger cubs some four weeks ago. The youngsters are progressing splendidly ,nnd are attracting much attention.
