TOBACCO GROWING
AMALGAMATION OF DOMINION
INTERESTS
AUCKLAND, February 17
The merger of tobacco growing interests in the Dominion with the objects of piacing the industry on a sound footing was announced by Mr C. H. M. Wills, of Auckland. Mr Wills said the new corporation would be known as the New Zealand Tobacco' Growers’ Federation, Ltd., and its primary object would be to watch the interest of growers throughout the Dominion. The decision in favour of amalgamation had been arrived at by the seven tobacco companies registered in Auckland. These comprised the New Zealand Tobacco Company, Ltd., Tobacco Growers of New Zealand. Ltd., Empire Tobacco Corporation, Ltd., Tobacco Producers Trust, Standard Tobacco Company, ltd., Pacific Tobacco Industries of Australia si a. Ltd., and Union Tobacco was expected to join the amalgamation within tliie next few days. All growers would be represented in the federation, and private growers who would not join the federation directly would be able to do so through associations formed in other districts such a Hawke’s Bay, Nelson and Marlborough. The federation would thus be in a position to speak on behalf of all growers of tobacco in New Zealand. A further object would he to attend to the co-operative marketing of nil tobaccos grown in the Dominion. Growers'would still have the right to dispose of their crops privately, or they could allow the Federation to act as agent. The essential in marketing was the establishment of a fixed standard of grades, and these had recently been set up hv the Department of Agriculture. Continuity of supplies was another factor which would play a large part, and the Federation hoped to he in a position to ensure steady suplies of certain fixed grades. The Federation would be a cooperative organisation. Income would bo derived from a levy upon all tobacco growers. The allotment of shares would be based upon the area ol land under cultivation bv a grower-shareholder with the object of ensuring that only growers’ interest should predominate.
