MAORI RECORDS

COLUMBIA GRAMOPHONE GO’S

IN i’ESTIG ATlOiNby

AUCKLAND, February 11

The possibility of making Maori records at Rotbrua is to be investigated by Mr A. Donner, managing director of this Columbia Gramophone Co., Ltd,, of Australia, who arrived at Auckland fron/i Sydney by the Maramo to-day. | / ‘‘New {Zealand is an excellent market for grcu'nophone records of all descriptions, particularly for the better class discs and classical recordings,” he said. “The standard of musical appreciation in the Dominion is probably a little higher than it is in Australia. Naturally, we prefer to make-the better class of records, not only because they help to create interest in good music, but also because they meet with a steady demand. The demand for lighter records and dance numbers varies exceedingly, for no sooner does one tune win public favour than another comes along to displace it.”

Mr Donner will be in New Zealand for about a month. If the chances' of Maori records at Rotorua are favourable a portable recording plant will probably be sent over from Australia later in the year.
