Chicago reports state the unpaid civic employees are growing more desperate hourly as it is rumoured and circulated that Mr Thompson is leaving lor Florida.
Alderman Avvey stated “The city employees will not go much longer with out cash. All they need is a leader to start serious trouble for city administration.” .Officials are. suddenly becoming worried that constituents may desert them at April primaries, and have promised determined efforts to find o way out of the increasing predicament; but a superabundance of words, combined with complete absence of action, has characterised the activities of the majority of relief workers. Tbe police have continued their round up of the criminal element with the arrest of about twenty-five hundred. suspects, some of whom would, according to Chief Detective, “grace a penitentiary roster or a hangman’s warrant.”
Tn-day’s principle capture was that of five chieftains of the notorious O’Donnell gang, who were apprehended at “a directors’ meeting.” Robert Randolph, president of the Industry Association discussing “racketeering,’ stated:—“There is not an industry or business in Chicago not paying a tribute, some l direct,'' and some indirect.
The public is paying in increased taxes, higher laundry arid tailoring bills, and higher retails; and in scores of other ways.” ”
