I'lic, railway comini si on erß have decided to amalgamate the engineering hrancheH involving the retirement of Doctor llradfieid, Chief of Railways and 'l'raniways Construction. The joint hrancheH will lie placed under Mr Raukon, Engincer-in-Chief of existing lines. Brad field retains his position as engineer in charge of the harbour bridge construction. The amalgamation makes possible considerable administrative economies.

A Bill has been introduced to provide for a Referendum on May 3id, at which voting will be compulsory for the reform of the State Legislative Council. The voting will be on a Bill already passed. The Labour members objected to the referendum which, they felt, would cost £70,000 at a time of financial stringency like this. They contended it be deferred to the next elections. The second reading debate is proceeding. N.S. WALES RAILWAYS. SYDNEY, February 12. The New South Wales railways have lost eight hundred thousand sterling for the first seven months of the current financial year. The State Treasurer, Mr Stevens, expects a deficit of one million and a half on the the railways at the end of June, which will be half a million more than that of the previous year.
