COUNTY OVERSEER’S REPORT
I have the honour to report the progress of work during the month of January.
NORTHERN RIDING
Olio Mile Bond Widening. All the clearing, grading and part of the formation drain the construction of a 12 inch diameter e.mcrcte pipe cuivert were completed in u satisfactory manner.
maintenance. Defective decking was removed and replaced on Kapitea ( Creek Bridge, Kumara Road, Clearwater Creek Bridge, and a platform culvert on Callaghans Road. Repairs were effected and trees cleared from Duffers Track four defective stringers, 36 in. by 15x8, removed and replaced. Also 49/14 feet xßx4 replaced and spiked and hand railing renewed on Palmer’s Creek Bridge, No. 2, Arahura Valley Road. The footbridge leading to Arahura Saleyards having two verydefective stringers, partly collapsed and unsafe for foot traffic, was repaired and strengthened with new stringers and decking which had been delivered at the bridge the previous month. Motor worn holes and low places were repaired on Arahura Valley, and a portion of One Mile Road, and blackberry cleared from the northern side of One Mile Road beyond the section to be widened. CENTRAL RIDING. Station Road Extension. The Contractors are making good progress with the work of metalling, which is almost completed; all concrete culverts, have been installed and new drainage almost completed. The whole of the work is very satisfactory. Arthurstown Road Widening. AH the clearing, draining, half the formation, which is all gravel filling, and metalling 14 feet in width are completed, aneb a 12 inch diameter concrete pipe culvert lengthened 15 feet. This work has ceased pending the. completion of Ruatapu-Mahinapua Road metalling for which the two lorries were required for cartage of metal.
Mahinapua Creek Clearing Track and Jetty. The work of removing trees and snags from the waterway was commenced during the latter part of the month, and the material (timber and ironwork) ordered for the jetty. The clearing and forming of the track to the site of the jetty was also put iiWhand.
MAINTENANCE. Blackberry and gorse were cleared from the lower end of Arthurstown Read, motor worn holes repaired on South Hokitika and Arthurstown Roads. A defective culvert was removed on McArthur Road and replaced with a double course of 18 inch diameter pipes. A new 12 inch diameter pipe culvert was excavated for and installed on Uhitcombe Valley Road, above Station Road, to prevent drainage flooding the roadway. The power grader was employed grading Pine Tree and Gaylor’s Road;’watertables were cleaned on Hokitika-llau Him and Gaylor’s Road. Dawson’s and White Roads were cleared of gorse and blackberry and Dawson’s Road well graded throughout, AVliite Road being graded as far as the swamp. This swamp section will be attended to later, the weather being too wet to continue over the softer portions of road. A portion of Ward Road wag repaired with gravel, and drainage attended to on Pine Tree Road. An extra 4x2 railing was placed on the fencing on Kanieri Tram ,and wire netting secured to the entire length of fencing. Concrete pipe construction wa s continued at Kanieri under the direction of F. Selby. SOUTHERN RIDING. Ruatapu-Alahinapua Aletailing. This work was advanced 900 links, wet weather preventing much being progress being made, the road being rendered too soft to cart over. This section connecting Ruatapu with Shanghai Road will be completed on Monday, February lOtli. Waitaha Lagoon Bridge. The bridge, wire netting and stone protection and one approach to the bridge has been completed, and the whole of the work should be finished by February loth. Petersen Road Extension. The eontractors completed the whole of the specified work about the middle of the month. Three Niile Track repairs were continued with two workmen who attended to fascining soft and boggy portions, also to corduroying 800 links of the soft surface of track. MAINTENANCE.
