SHIPPING RING
RAISING FREIGHTS AGAINST AUSTRALIA. ,

MELBOURNE, Feb. 5
Reports have been received from London indicating that the overseas shipping companies trading with Australia are about to increase their charges for freights. This action is contemplated because they fear heavy losses through a decline in the imports to Australia, following in the recent tariff increases, also through a loss of outward wool cargoes, the suspension of migration to Australia, and general depression.

In the Property Investment Company conspiracy case, cabled yesterday, all three defendants were committed for tria. Among the evidence given today. it was stated that in some install* es of share sales, brokerage was allowed to the extent of two. shillings for which pu'v two shillings was paid, tne company receiving sixpence. STEAMERS CALLING PORTS. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Feb. C. Pando Company has decided to make ‘Brisbane its terminal port of call for the Royal Mail liners as from December next. Vessels will remain in Sydney six, instead of twelve days. Orient liners have been calling at Brisbane for twenty years.
