THEFT CHARGE.

WELLINGTON, February 4

Alter being given a meal -at the house of a minister in Lower Hutt, Janies Grant stole the handbag of a lady visitor. The offence occurred in August last year, but it was not till today that Grant, who is forty-one, charged with the effence. The police stated that at the time Grant had been on a drinking bout He took the bag thinking that it wauld contain money, but it didnt and lie threw it away. It was subsequently recovered.

Grant told the Bench that he had work to go to, and he would like to take out a prohibition order. He was convicted and ordered to come up if called on within twelve months. SUDDEN DEATH. MAN BEING INTERVIEWED BY POLICE. AUCKLAND, February 5. While being interviewed by detectives in an hotel, John Walker, a visitor to Auckland, collapsed shortly before noon to-day. A doctor was called but Walker died within half ail hour the cause of death being apparently heart failure. Walker was a draughtsman with no fixed place of abode. Detective Moon and Acting-Detective Bowman went to the hotel at 11.30 a.m. to ' interview him concerning a cheque he had, cashed, and also in regard to a warrant for his arrest issued in Dunedin on a false pretences charge. The detectives told him to dress, but after putting on trousers and shirt the man collapsed. A doctor was called, and ordered his removal to tlie Auckland Hospital, but before this could he done Walker died.

SAMOAN POLICE FORCE,

RECRUITS CALLED FOR

WELLINGTON, February 5

The Commissioner of Police is calling for applications in the four chief centres for recruits for the Samoan Military Police Force, the engagement being for twelve months if the men’s services are required for that period. The pay ranges from 8s fid a day for privates to 12s lOd a day for sergeants, plus clothing and rations. Recruiting closes bn February 12. Single men will he given preference. The total number of the force lias not been announced.
