DOPING ATHLETES

A SERIOUS ALLEGATION

(Australian Press Association)

(Received this day at 9.40 a.m.)

MELBOURNE, February 7

An extraordinary allegation was made by J. W. Scluife (stipendiary steward and handicapper of the Victorian Athletic League), at a meeting of this body concerning the administration of deadly drugs to runners without their knowledge by their trainers. “This cursed practice,” he said, “is increasing. The usual method is to give them a drink before the race. The drink contains a drug which undermines them physically.” J. Ball (secretary of the League) said cases had come under notice where sprint runners received “tlie needle” under the arm and where middle distance runners received a needle in the knees. It was decided to hold searching investigations.
